THE SPIRIT
of EDEN
IS A PLACE
YOU HEAR

Inspired by Talk Talk's masterpiece Spirit of Eden (1988) — we built a living garden where music grows like moss. No noise. No hurry. Only improvisation, birdsong, tape hiss and the art of disappearing into nature.

01 — About the Project

We turned an album into a living landscape

The Spirit of Eden began as a question: what if you could walk inside a record? In 2021 we bought a derelict orchard and began planting sound. Today thespiritofeden.com is part archive, part sanctuary, part slow-music label.

◍ Archive

Rare Talk Talk session notes, Mark Hollis interviews, handwritten scores and 140 hours of outtakes studied note-by-note.

◍ Sanctuary

A real garden in Kent with listening hides, a stone chapel for improvisation and no mobile signal by design.

  • ✓   Daily dawn chorus recorded with vintage Neumann mics
  • ✓   Monthly Eden Sessions — one mic, no overdubs, no applause
  • ✓   Rewilding program with native orchids, owls and heritage apples

02 — Philosophy of Silence

Less notes, more meaning

Mark Hollis said: “Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note — and don’t play one note unless you’ve got a reason to play it.” We farm that idea. Literally.

/ 01

Slow Listening

90-minute sessions in darkness. No phones. You hear breath, wood, wind. Most people cry by minute 40.

/ 02

Improvisation as Prayer

Musicians never rehearse. They walk the garden for 3 hours, then play what the place told them.

/ 03

Rewilding Sound

We removed 2km of fences, restored ponds. Nightingales returned in 2024 — they now sing on records.

/ 04

Analog Eternity

Studer tape, valve mics, no quantization. Mistakes stay. Like in Eden, nothing is weeded out.

“We stopped trying to make music about nature and started letting nature make music through us.

The Lake Room

Water that remembers every note

Our still-water lake amplifies cello naturally. Musicians play from a floating oak platform at 5am.

03 — Legacy 1988 → 2026

From studio darkness to open sky

Spirit of Eden was recorded in darkness with blacked-out windows. We reversed it: same spirit, but under open sky.

1988

The Myth Is Born

Talk Talk releases Spirit of Eden. Critics confused, musicians stunned. Months of improvisation edited into 6 tracks. Mark Hollis retreats from fame.

2019

Silence After Hollis

After Mark’s passing, fans pilgrimage to Somerset. Idea emerges: don’t build a museum — plant a garden that sounds like him.

2023

First Eden Session

12 musicians, 1 chapel, 0 audience. Recording leaks, 3M listens. The Guardian calls it “the quietest revolution in music”.

2026
